Raku firing is an ancient Japanese ceramic technique that has been used since about the 16th century to create amazing works of art.  The Raku firing technique involves rapidly firing bisque ware to between 1200 and 1900 degrees Fahrenheit in about 1 hour. Firing at such a rate causes significant thermal shock to the pieces and so special care must be taken in selecting the clay bodies that can withstand the rapid heating and then cooling.

Pots are removed from the kiln at height of temperature then “decorated” with combustible materials like feathers, leaves, animal hair and others.  I also make my own raku glazes that can be rapid fired.  Raku glazes are ofted “crackle” glazes so that they appear to break or “spider web” as they rapidly cool.  These pots are sometimes then put into a bin full of more combustibles and left to “smoke” so any of the cracks between the glaze get filled in with a dark carbon line.  Very distinctive!

Raku can be done “naked” (not you) meaning with bare, unglazed work and covered with slip that crasks when heated. These pots are placed in bins of combustible materials to absorb smoke between the cracks.  In addition to pure Raku firings, I often do Saggar firings. A Saggar firing is generally firing one pot inside another stuffed with combustible materials.  My Saggar firings often use metal oxides, carbonates, and sulfates to “paint” the pots with color and smoke.

Raku and Saggar firings are wonderfully unpredictable and while I can often get in the same color family with different firings, it is impossible to duplicate so every piece is truly unique.
